A key defence on non-action on climate change has been the effect it would have on business. Yet it’s this inaction that has led to the severe fires we are seeing in Australia.
A number of these areas are tourism dependent and tourists are doing their best to avoid the fire areas. They are either getting out as soon as they can or cancelling plans to go to the effected areas.
Areas like the Great Barrier Reef are also effected by climate change and tourism to that area is also down.
A lot of the firefighters are volunteers and are taking time off work to deal with the fires. This is time spent fulfilling an important service, but not contributing to the economy.
All of these will harm businesses and in turn the economy. So this argument of protecting the economy has gone up in flames like the hundreds of houses that have been raised in the past few months.
