The announcement of a metaverse sounded a little bit like pie in the sky thinking. However something like it already exists and is thriving.
It’s Minecraft. As Clive Thompson points out, it’s highly successful and is already doing what Meta is only promising in the future. It’s decentralised, immersive, creative, open (though John Gruber has something to say about that) and even has economic activity.
Minecraft seems to work well and hasn’t interfered with any elections yet. This is a much more promising future than Meta.
